Nearly half of adults in Wales ignore possible blood cancer signs

Taking blood pressure

Nearly half of adults in Wales dismiss possible symptoms of blood cancer, which is the third biggest cause of cancer deaths in the UK.
Research from YouGov on behalf of cancer charity Bloodwise revealed that 49 per cent had at least one symptom in the last year, but did not see a doctor.
Around 12,500 people in Wales are living with blood cancer and almost half dismiss the signs.
750
people lose their lives to blood cancer in the country every year.
Bloodwise has expressed concern that low public awareness of the symptoms is contributing to delays in diagnosing blood cancer.
Though the findings are disappointing they echo what we hear all the time from people with blood cancer who tell us that they had symptoms for several weeks even several months before deciding to get checked by a doctor.
Blood cancer symptoms can be confused with less serious common conditions, which may lead to them being dismissed or downplayed. People often tell us it never crossed their mind that their symptoms were being caused by blood cancer.
In most cases, thankfully, the cause won’t be anything serious. However, if any of these symptoms are persistent, unexplained or unusual they should be checked out by a doctor.
