If you have Comcast as your Internet provider, you may want to check your recent bills. Comcast has confirmed that a “software error occurred” that has resulted in about 2,000 customers being mistakenly charged for going over their monthly data caps.
Comcast imposes data caps in 27 of the 39 states it operates in. If you go over its arbitrary 1TB limit, Comcast will charge you $10 for each block of 50GB. Or Comcast customers can pay $50 a month for unlimited data.
Comcast has reportedly already refunded 2,000 customers that it mistakenly billed for going over their data caps. Ars Technica reports that it is very likely even more Comcast customers have been mistakenly overcharged by Comcast, so check your bills.
Exactly how long this overbilling has been happening is unknown, and we don’t know how widespread it is. It is very likely that you may have been charged for going over your data cap when you did not actually use that much data.
