Incidents related to smartphone chargers regularly make one of the social networks. They are left unattended for whole days and sometimes trigger residential fires. But how can a charger start a fire ? What are the causes of burns of a charger? Is it really possible that a charger plugged into a vacuum can catch fire? In this article, I will answer all these questions.
Can a smartphone charger really catch fire?
In normal use, if the charger is of good quality and adapted to the smartphone, the answer is no.
However, in some cases, most often on counterfeit magazines , cases of fire have been reported. They can be related to different causes leading to a short circuit.

The causes of fires caused by chargers
First cause
The first cause may be the USB cable connecting the charger to the phone . If it is damaged or bent too much , its internal conductors can short-circuit. Therefore, the charger is still trying to ensure the voltage of 6 volts required for charging. But the short circuit causes the transformer to overheat ... until the fire starts.

Second cause
A poor quality charger can also overheat and start a fire . The transformer circuit gives off heat when converting from AC to DC. The heat can slowly accumulate and cause inflammation of nearby tissue or wood. That's why it's safer to charge your phone on cold surfaces and away from flammable objects.
To protect yourself and your device, avoid counterfeit chargers, chargers of different devices, even if they seem to be compatible, and ensure the status of their USB or Lightning.
Why do you have to unplug the charger?
You must always unplug the charger for two reasons:
- The first of them is the energy bill . When you leave chargers plugged in, electricity is consumed even when the charger is not in use. Not only does it waste energy, but you pay for electricity that you do not really use.
- The second reason stems from the first. The energy "sucked" by the charger is not used, it heats the device , which can cause fire starts.
It is therefore recommended to disconnect all your chargers and even more the devices being charged if you leave your home.
