Since the first opus released in 2007 on Wii, I admit having always had a soft spot for the Mario and Sonic series at the Olympic Games. Summer and winter, these games of the "party-games" type, in other words composed of mini-games to play with friends, have always made it possible to live warm and friendly moments with family or friends.
Nothing better to conclude a night with friends, or spend a rainy afternoon with women and children: sports events, fun, and the pleasure of finding the two licensed video game, Mario and Sonic.
Tokyo Olympics next year require, Nintendo released a new album aptly titled Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. On Nintendo Switch.
On the menu, more than 30 disciplines. Some really drawn from the Olympic sports panel, others totally invented. Thus, we find new disciplines such as climbing, Karate-Kumite, Surf-Shortboard and Skateboarding.
Add ground gym, 100m freestyle swimming, horse show jumping, 1000m double canoe, 110m hurdles, soccer, archery, badminton, boxing, javelin throwing, rugby, fencing, 4x100 relay, discus throw, 100m, table tennis, fencing, or Tokyo 1964 "old-school" events with Super Mario Bros graphics such as 100m, the 400m hurdles, the long jump, the marathon, the 10m dive, the jump, the canoe, the judo, the volleyball, the shooting, and finally, the "dreams events" namely the race, the shooting and the karate which are delusional variants of these disciplines.
Finally, for the characters, there are 20. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Wario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Dr. Eggman, Shadow and so on.
On paper, therefore, Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has everything to seduce. Once the controller is in hand, we are still on our hunger.
Already, the game offers several modes of play, one or two Joy-Cons, or simply by blasting the buttons (at the price of Joy-Cons, it may be a little pain in the ass to screw up his controllers in this way). The most fun is the choice of two Joy-Cons, in reality. So only two players (you have 8 Joy-Cons, you? Already, everyone does not have 4 ...). And it crashes a little fun to play with family or friends.
As such, forget the solo game. It is not even worth mentioning: this type of game is to be shared with others, obligatorily.
Then, as in all games of this genre, not all disciplines are equal. Unfortunately, the retro prints, Tokyo 1964, with NES-like graphics, clearly lack fun, felt, and will eventually please only "old-timers". To the gamers. Who this game is not necessarily for. All are not uninteresting, that said. But it's still not worth the disciplines of Tokyo 2020 with "modern" graphics and 3D. Clearly.
